Welcome to my world of unusual, one of a kind guitars! - My name is Rob Blackaby, and I am a builder of acoustic/electric guitars, cigar box guitars and
"re-purposed stuff" guitars.
I am also offering teaching sessions in my shop, one student at a time - No charge for my help, but you will need to pay for your supplies
Build from a kit, or start from scratch - I can help you decide what to try.
Contact me, to see if we can coordinate on a schedule we can both work with.
I am based in Selah WA, just outside of Yakima.
New Twists on an old Americana craft
From the days of building a crude guitar from whatever materials you had on hand, cigar box guitars are a true nod to the past.
The three stringers are usually set up with an open tuning, intended to be played slide style.
The four string rigs offer a wider array of tunings, and they can be tuned in "fifths", like those typically found on banjos, violins, and mandolins -
"Guitar tuning" (Chicago tuning) and ukelele tunings are also an option.
You'd be amazed what can be turned into a guitar
This is the experimental end of my building efforts - where the whimsical and alternative ideas come to life - where I can allow my "why not?" reflexes to lead the way.
The possibilities here are an endless fascination for me, and I am always searching through antique shops, watching for candidates that could be morphed into guitar bodies.
If you have something you'd like to see become a guitar, then let's discuss it sometime.
Build your own Cigar Box Guitar! - or tap into shop time for your own creations
If you have even basic tool usage experience, I can walk you through building your own C.B.G. - Join me in my shop, and we will step through your project - You will build it with my guidance and then take it home :)
The cost for your supplies can be about $100, to $150, depending on what you want to build - custom
components or design configurations will drive this price up.
If you have your own ideas, I can provide the shop, and some coaching for you.
